This circle at Willoughby Hedge was reported on the 4th of May 2017. It is located very close to a circle which a appeared there last year (see here for information about the 2016 circle), next to the services on the A303. The landscape surrounding this formation is littered with ancient tumuli and is not far form White Sheet Castle, a neolithic hill fort where crop circles have also appeared before.

The design is quite unusual in that it is neither a long linear formation or a a traditional circular one, but rather a marriage of the two. Two arcs of circles (of increasing diameter), are connected by arms to a central pivotal circle. It’s meaning, should it have one, remains entirely enigmatic.

I did suggest that Willoughby Hedge was a “fake”, based on the very rough characteristics of fallen plants on the ground, However Ralph Waldo Emerson noted that “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds”.

This circle combines several different design categories. It contains a decreasing (or increasing) series of circles, circles connected to lines (dumbbells) and a reverse Z or S shape. It resembles a formation from 2013 at Stoney Middleton – see below. Researcher and geometer Michael Glickman has also created a silhouette of this design below.

A new crop picture near Willoughby Hedge on May 4, 2017 seems to point to where another elegant crop picture appeared, on the other side of a hedge of trees, on June 5, 2016. This new example seems however not to be of any “clandestine mystery”, but rather a human-made fake.

The overall precision of geometry from an aerial perspective seems to compare well with countless other canola formations that are, by probability standards at least, mysterious in origin. The course nature of canola, as said many times before is that it does not lend itself to sharp edged design or ultra-neat ground lay unlike wheat which is sown more densely resulting in a much tighter impression. So to not concider such in appraisal would seem misleading.

The bare areas within the ground-lay equate to the way in which the crop has been energy 'combed' and there seems to be a consistency of this feature here over all 17 separate components of the design. In other words the lay was not formed by means of one continuous sweep in one direction or the other commonly found so often elsewhere. I have seen this combed feature many times before and it is not consistent with foot tread as in…
